〈展示のテーマ〉

絵でも写真でも、感触をとらえることに関心があります。あれやこれやが、あの時、あの空間で、あの匂いと音と光で、どのような感じがしたのか。
写真では、特にものの質感に対して視点が強調されます。つやつやしていた、ぼさぼさ、ギザギザ、すべすべしていた、など。どう対象の状態に迫るかということはとても心地よく、それは、その瞬間自体のテクスチャーに近づく試みでもあります。


「過程の質感」は、移ろうものの状態に焦点を当てたものです。過去に撮った写真を振り返り、その時々に胸に響くものを作品にするということがよくあります。
何気なく撮っていたものが、のちに急に差し迫ってくることもあれば、当時はとらえられなかったものがふとつかめたということもあり、また、要素に過ぎなかったものが主題が生まれてひとつにまとまることもあります。今回の15枚の作品は、過去15年にわたり撮った写真たちです。ある種のものごとはむしろ、時間が経過してからのほうがはっきり見えてきます。撮っていてその場で、ああ、これはしばらく眠ることが必要なんだな、とわかることもあります。見たものとの関係が熟成して作品になるのです。遠ざかってから近づけられるというのは面白いことです。 


Both in painting and photography, I am fascinated in capturing a sensation: how this and that felt like; at that moment, in that space, with the smell, light, sound, and emotion.
Particularly in photography, the physical feel of my object of interest is emphasized: it was shiny, fuzzy, jaggy, silky, etc. Approaching the fleeting condition feels very nice, and doubles an attempt to get closer to the texture of the moment itself.


“Texture of a Process” is focused on being in an instant state. I often select some pictures from the past and develop them into works later on; some random ones now speak to me, I can see what captivated me that wasn’t quite vivid before, or it could be an arisen theme that binds all the elements together. The fifteen pieces in the show were taken in a range of time from about fifteen years ago up till recently. As a matter of fact, I find certain things begin to appear clearer after a period of time. Some photographs need to sleep for a while, which I realize when taking them, and those become works once the relationship with what has been seen ripens. It is interesting to know that you can get close from a distance.
